Keeping business calls working during power and broadband outages
Moving business telephony to VoIP makes it much easier to route calls between offices, mobiles and remote teams. It also changes the assumptions behind continuity planning: digital phones, routers and local network equipment normally require both power and internet connectivity.
Ofcom notes that, unlike a traditional line-powered corded telephone, a digital phone will only work during a power cut when suitable backup is available. A resilient business setup should therefore consider the whole call path rather than only the desk handset.
Build resilience in layers
- Protect local equipment. Size an uninterruptible power supply for the router, network switches, telephone base stations and any other essential equipment.
- Add a second connection. Mobile data or an independent broadband circuit can provide useful backup where being reachable is business-critical.
- Route calls away from the affected site. Network-level forwarding can send calls to another office, a mobile, voicemail or an answering team without relying on the failed premises.
- Keep an offline contact plan. Staff should know who can activate the continuity route and how customers will be updated.
- Test it. Disconnect the primary broadband and mains supply during a controlled exercise, then confirm that incoming calls, outgoing calls and emergency arrangements behave as expected.
Match the plan to the business
A small office may need a straightforward mobile failover. A contact centre or multi-site organisation may need diverse connectivity, tested queue routing and clear recovery objectives. Equipment such as alarms and lift phones should be assessed separately with the relevant specialist.
